Top Teeth Tips......

Did you know...

Conceal with colour. Ladies: Choose a medium coral or light red lipstick. These colors make your teeth look whiter, whereas lighter-colored lipsticks tend to bring out the yellow in teeth.

The Nutrition Connection

Eating sugar, as you probably already know, is a major cause of tooth decay. But it's not just how much sugar you eat — when and how you eat it can be just as important to keeping teeth healthy.
When you eat sugary foods or drink fizzy or sweet drinks frequently throughout the day, the enamel that protects your teeth is constantly exposed to acids. Hard sweets, cough drops, and breath mints that contain sugar are especially harmful because they dissolve slowly in your mouth. Many experts suggest that you take a 3-hour break between eating foods containing sugar.
Sugary or starchy foods eaten with a meal are less harmful to your teeth than when they're eaten alone, possibly because the production of saliva, which washes away the sugar and bacteria, is increased. Eating sugary foods before you go to bed can be the most damaging (especially if you don't brush your teeth afterwards) because you don't produce as much saliva when you sleep.
For most people, it's hard to cut out sweets completely, so try to follow these more realistic guidelines:
  • Eat carbohydrates (sugars and starches) with a meal.
  • If you can't brush your teeth after eating, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash, or chew sugarless gum.
  • Don't eat sugary foods between meals.
  • If you snack, eat nonsugary foods, such as cheese or raw veggies
  • Dental caries (tooth decay) can attack the teeth at any age. In fact, 84% of 17-year-olds have the disease. Left untreated, caries can cause severe pain and result in tooth loss. Losing teeth affects how you look and feel about yourself as well as your ability to chew and speak. Treating caries is also expensive. So prevention and early treatment are important.
  • It may surprise you to know that 60% of 15-year-olds experience gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. Gingivitis, which involves the gums but not the underlying bone and ligament, is almost always caused by an accumulation of plaque. As with caries, treatment can be expensive.
If you remove plaque regularly and follow good oral hygiene habits, your gums usually will return to their healthy state. However, more serious gum disease can cause gums to swell, turn red, and bleed, and sometimes causes discomfort. How dentists treat gum disease depends on the extent of the disease.

Our "meet the specialist" evening with Anita Hazari, consultant plastic surgeon was a great success- very informative and fantastic to see so many faces.  Did you know we can offer some minor plastic surgery at the clinic? Upper eyelid lifts and mole/blemish removal are all available under local anaesthetic, as well as line reducing injectables and dermaroller treatment, and if you are interested in a more complex procedure, then why not have your consultation here, in the comfort of our luxurious clinic?

As part of National Smile Month, which ran from 15 May to 15 June, members of Stradbrook’s dental team, Rachel and Zena, have visited a number of local primary schools giving talks to Year 3 pupils about how to take care of their teeth. Most recently they visited St Stephen’s and Long Mead Primary Schools, both in Tonbridge, helping pupils to understand the importance of diet in preventing decay and how good dental hygiene contributes to their overall health.  As well as explaining about hidden sugars in the diet, they talked about the effects of acidic erosion – the main culprits being any carbonated (fizzy) drink (even sparkling water) and fruit juices. It’s important to either cut down on these or drink them through a straw to bypass the teeth. Rachel and Zena are scheduled to visit Fosse Bank and Cage Green Primary Schools later this month.

Stradbrook Skin welcomes Dr Anita Hazari and Dr Pietro Farro

Dr Anita Hazari

We are pleased to welcome Dr Anita Hazari, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon to our growing team of dermatologists and skin experts. Stradbrook Skin is now able to offer minor cosmetic and medical surgical procedures including eyelid reduction and earlobe correction. Anita is one of only 480 Plastic Surgeons in the UK registered with the General Medical Council as a Specialist in Plastic Surgery. It would be extremely difficult to find someone with Anita’s credentials in ‘chain clinics’ and Anita’s appointment confirms Stradbrook’s commitment to provide services from only the most well qualified medical/skin experts. Anita is available for consultations and treatments on Monday afternoons and evenings.

We also welcome dermatologist Dr Pietro Farro who has joined us since Dr Rowena McKenzie went on maternity leave. Dr Farro has more than 10 years’ experience in dermatology and laser treatments. He qualified and practiced in Naples, Italy and now divides his time between working as a Consultant Dermatologist in Italy and in private practice in the UK. His decision to join us at Stradbrook Skin was made because we are one of the few clinics in the UK to own the world famous Palomar laser and IPL system. Dr Farro is available at the clinic on Wednesdays.

And finally we extend our warmest congratulations to our consultant dermatologist Rowena and her husband on the birth of their first baby, Benjamin. Both Mum and baby are thriving. Rowena will be returning to Stradbrook Skin in October.

Stradbrook Skin’s Open Day -a huge success

Stradbrook Skin’s Open Days are proving very popular.  The most recent was held on 8 June and saw the launch of Stradbrook Skin’s new VIP Members Club entitling members to a 10% discount on our range of treatments and products over a 12-month period - for just £50.  Additionally VIP Members will have priority booking for taster sessions and consultations at our Open Days throughout the year. While the discount excludes our beauty and sports therapy treatments regular clients will potentially make huge savings on their treatment regime and products over the year’s membership.

Stradbrook Dental offers graduating students free first consultation and check up

Stradbrook is lending a helping hand by offering graduating students their first consultation free of charge.  Many students feeling the financial pinch cut their dental health check-ups after years of regular visits throughout childhood and adolescence. We think it’s a shame that after establishing good dental discipline that this may slide because finances are tight. We don’t want to see anyone’s dental health deteriorate and want to actively encourage continuing preventative check-ups for young people getting started in their careers.
